‘I first met Don Reed in 1974 after his appointment to the Boral Resources Group as Group Geologist for the states of New South Wales and Queensland. At that time I was General Manager of Boral Resources, Concrete and Sand and Gravel Operations in Queensland.

I have followed Don's progress with great interest during his time with Pioneer Concrete overseas and through his activities in the Institute of Quarrying. On his return to Australia and after a short time with TNT he formed Don Reed and Associates in 1987 to act as consultants to the extractive industries. A good example of this is the work carried out for Adelaide Brighton and its fully owned subsidiary, the Hy-tec Group since 2004.

During my time as CEO Boral Resources ,we utilized the expertise of Don Reed & Associates whenever necessary. After I left Boral in 1994 to pursue other activities I worked with Don for the Australian Custom Service as an Expert Witness in relation to retrospective Diesel Fuel Rebate claims by Boral, CSR, Pioneer and others.

I first met Don in early 2003 after Adelaide Brighton acquired the assets of Hy-Tec Industries, a company Don had been involved with since its inception. From that time through to my leaving Adelaide Brighton in 2011, Don worked with me as an integral part of Hy-tec’s quarry development and acquisition team with projects in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. As part of that relationship, Don agreed to work on a retainer basis from July 2009 when my role for the company was Executive General Manager, Hy-Tec Concrete and Aggregates.

During the development of the company’s flagship quarry at Hartley, New South Wales, Don was heavily involved in everything from resource assessment and extraction planning through to crushing and screening plant design and costing. Don was the catalyst for Hy-Tec’s acquisition of three quarries on the New South Wales mid north coast and played a major role in the full and comprehensive evaluation of a significant number of established quarry and greenfield sites in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria as well as others in Tasmania and South Australia.
